Dimanche soir : l'arrivée

Dimanche soir : à peine arrivés, nous construisons des jeux géants. Nous commençons par les plans.
Sunday night : we’ve barely set foot in Font-Romeu and we’re already working hard on the giant boards : first, the blueprints.

La conception est issue des technologies de la recherche spatiale.
Design techniques are drawn from cutting-edge rocket-science.

Nous passons ensuite à la pratique dans une ambiance relativement joviale.
Then for some arts and crafts.

Ces bandes de scotch seront finalement jugées superflues mais encore fallait-il essayer pour le savoir !
These strips of tape will be deemed useless in the end but it was worth a shot !

A l'extérieur, une second équipe prend en charge la peinture des pions.
Outside, team beta takes care of the painting of the discs.

Pour ne pas salir les graviers, nous avons placé les pions sur du papier journal. Ecologie !
So as not to paint the gravel beneath, we placed the discs on old newspapers. Trees aren’t the only ones needing a hug !

Premiers essais de connexion Wi-Fi.... ça durera toute la semaine, avec plus ou moins de bonheur !

Lundi matin : Vlad réalise le premier exposé de la semaine, qui porte sur les principes de base de l'Othello. Nous découvrons un garçon brillant et sûr de lui. Un exemple pour la jeunesse du XXI eme siècle.
Monday morning : Vlad gives the first presentation of the week on the basics of the game. A bright and confident young man: an example for generations to come.

Lundi, début d'après-midi : Michele présente quelques ouvertures, alors que Thierry et Mario sont quelque peu dissipés.

Lundi soir : Initiation à d'autres jeux de société, à la cafétéria.

Mardi matin : Stéphane nous fait un exposé des problèmes de coins.
Tuesday morning : Stephane presents some grab-the-corner problems.

Toujours Mardi matin : Remko présente l'ouverture Rose-Bill. Un exposé très intéressant qui sera ensuite mis en pratique par les joueurs.

Mercredi soir : initiation des sportifs. Thierry explique ici la stratégie à un patineur artistique, sous le regard de ses collègues.
Wednesday night : presentation of Othello to athletes: Thierry explaining strategy to an ice-skater as his colleagues look on.

Jeudi matin : Serge Poirier explique comment il enseigne Othello aux enfants, une heure par semaine à Rennes.

S amedi matin : présentation par Thierry d'une partie perdue contre Serge Benoit, notamment à cause d'une erreur de retournement en ouverture. Juste avant, il avait évoqué un article écrit deux ans plus tôt pour FForum, sur le thème de l'avantage des blancs dû à la parité, en réalité tout à fait fictif.
Saturday morning : presentation by Thierry of a game lost against Serge Benoit, not least because of a flipping-error in the opening. Just before, he mentioned an article written two years ago for Fforum in which he spoke of the advantage to white given by parity.

Samedi après-midi : le tournoi à trous. Le principe consiste à placer aléatoirement des marques dans des cases où il sera interdit de jouer. Certaines cases deviennent ainsi pratiquement équivalentes à des coins ou des cases X.
Saturday after-noon : Black-hole Othello tournament. The idea is to randomly place holes in the board where no-one can play. In this way, some squares can have the same properties as corners.

Samedi soir : sortie au restaurant.

Comme l'an dernier, le Palm de Michele circule d'un convive à l'autre... nous jouons collectivement des parties d'Othello.
Like last year, Michele’s Palm is passed down the table: we play a collective game of Othello.

Dimanche : four & tournois
Sunday : oven & tournaments

Dimanche matin : visite du four solaire reconverti en attraction à touristes. Mais côté production d'électricité, c'est un four.
Sunday morning : visit of the solar oven which has been better at producing revenues from tourism than electricity.

Dimanche après-midi : deux tournois se jouent en parallèle, en cinq rondes. L'un est une sélection pour le championnat de France, l'autre est un tournoi officiel. Philippe Juhem concourrant dans les deux tournois, il jouera plusieurs parties en simultanée (ici, contre Mario Madrona et Monique Lecat, qu'il battra tous les deux... quel champion !)
Sunday after-noon : two tournaments are played simultaneously in five rounds. One is a qualifier for the French Championship, the other an official tournament. Philippe Juhem played in both simultaneously (here against Mario Madrona and Monique Lecat beating them both… ain’t that something!)

Au fond, Pascal Staigre, de passage à Font Romeu avec sa famille, bat Serge Benoit et gagne sa place pour le championnat de France. Au premier plan, Monique a fait un stoner à Philippe Juhem mais perdra quand même.
In the back, Pascal Staigre dropped by Font-Romeu with his family to qualify for the French Championship notably thanks to his victory against Serge Benoit. In the foreground, Monique stoned Philippe Juhem but lost anyway.

Dimanche en fin d'après-midi : finale du tournoi de ping pong entre Andrea et Cédric. Après la finale de la coupe du monde de football, la France prend sa revanche sur l'Italie.
Sunday in the late after-noon : ping-pong championship final between Andrea and Cedric. France pays Italie back for the lost world championship in Football.

Ce tableau le prouve : Cédric est vainqueur ! Comme l'an dernier.

Dimanche soir : débriefing de la semaine, présidé par Monique.
Sunday night : debriefing of the week with Monique in the Chair.

Remise du Grand Prix de Font-Romeux qui synthétise les résultats de toute la semaine. Cela inclut les tournois d'Othello et de ping pong, ainsi que les parties de cartes (de “bouchon”, plus précisément). Des points ont également été accordés à ceux qui sont arrivés en premier au petit déjeuner. Le vainqueur est Michele.
Awarding of the Font-Romeu Grand Prix which takes into account everything from Othello tournaments to ping pong, to card games (“bouchon” to be exact). Points were even awarded to the first arrived at breakfast ! Winner : Michele.
